Borneo
A huge and rugged island, the third largest in the world, Malaysian Borneo comprises the states of Sarawak and Sabah in the northwest of the island. The rest of the island is shared between Indonesia and the tiny, oil-rich country of Brunei.
Dense, tropical rainforests, remote indigenous tribes, incredible wildlife, and a rich cultural heritage make modern-day Borneo a truly fabulous destination for families, young or mature couples and intrepid explorers alike.
Stunning sunsets and Majestic Mountains
This country is a diver’s dream. Glide along stunning coral reefs in the warm, crystal-clear waters off the uninhabited Sipadan Island and get close to vividly coloured fish, barracuda, manta rays, huge Hawksbill Turtles and maybe encounter Hammerhead or Whale Sharks.
Borneo hosts some of the most beautiful beaches in Asia, some easy, and some harder to reach. The beach at Tanjung Aru is only a 15-minute drive from Kotu Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah. Near deserted during the day, locals, buskers and street food traders arrive in the evening to socialise and watch the sun set, meltingly, into the sea. Couples may prefer the peace of Mabul Beach. It’s very popular with divers, but the sand is soft and white, and the waters clear enough to watch marine life while standing on the beach!
A river cruise along the mighty Kinabatangan River takes you into the rainforest. Sharp eyes could spot endangered Pygmy Elephants, Sumatran Rhino, Gibbons, Proboscis Monkeys, Water Monitor Lizards and Crocodiles. Above your head fly Hornbills or Kingfishers. Visit the world famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where the so, appealing injured or orphaned primates are treated and looked after, before their release, free to swing through the jungle canopy once more. Irresistible!
Overlooking all is the majestic Mount Kinabalu. At 4,095 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest in Asia. For adventurous (and fit!) souls, the path to the top is accessible and well maintained. Achievable in one day, many prefer an overnight stay at the Laban Rata hut at 3776 metres before setting off, pre-dawn, to reach the summit and watch the sun rise.
