Tantalising Thailand
From the hectic bustle of Bangkok, to the laid-back tranquillity of Chiang Rai, or the soft sands of Paradise Island, Thailand, the ‘land of smiles’ was once notable as a backpacker’s destination, but it has evolved impressively. Go, discover for yourself!
Your journey through Thailand will more often than not start in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. This crowded, overwhelming yet fascinating city will assault your senses with an abundance of vibrant food markets, temples, and palaces. Sample some of its famous street food, such as barbecue chicken, steamed dumplings, or delicious, sweet delights. Visit the grand palace with its temple of the Emerald Buddha. For a more entertaining market experience, explore one of the floating markets on a series of canals. Damneon Sadak market is about an hour out of Bangkok and is very popular, it is close to the famous Maeklong Railway Market, where trains pass by several times a day. Escape the bustle and noise of the city in the oasis of peace of Lumpini Park. Shop in one of many malls then, as the sun sets, enjoy a cocktail in one of the many rooftop bars, before taking a nighttime river cruise, as the city lights up.
Colourful Temples and National Parks
Travel to the northwest to relax in Chiang Mai and its surrounding mountains. Learn to cook local dishes like the popular Khao Soi, a curried noodle soup. Visit the Old Town with its many temples like the stunning Wat Phhra Singh, Wat Chiang Man, and Wat Phan Tao temples, which are all within walking distance of each other. A must on many people's bucket lists is a visit to an elephant sanctuary. We recommend Elephant Nature Park, an ethical sanctuary, for elephants that have been rescued from cruel practices such as circus shows, riding, and begging, by giving them a chance to live freely in natural surroundings. Float along the Mae Ping River, drifting past stunning green scenery and traditional teak houses, stopping along the way at a farm to learn about the local produce. Hike through Doi Inthanon National Park, for stunning views, waterfalls, and pagodas. Just outside the city centre, watch the sunset while listening to monks chant at the sacred Doi Suthep Temple.
A quieter, yet no less stunning region is the less touristy Chiang Rai, where a market visit is a must, for a genuine experience with the locals. Travel to the mountainous region of Mae Salong, to visit a tea plantation, and drink in the beautiful views, while tasting the tea. Absorb a few hours of aesthetic stimulation with the eclectic exhibits in the eccentric, yet beautiful Baan Dam Museum (Black House), which holds artefacts, paintings, animal bones, sculptures and silver and gold items. In the region, there are three main temples that should be seen, the White, Golden, and Blue temples, all incredible in their own way. Finally, you can't leave Chiang Rai without visiting the Golden Triangle, where the three countries of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, as well as the merging of Mekong and Ruak Rivers.
One small note. Please remember while traveling through Thailand and its islands, you can help the gibbons that you may see in bars or on beaches by not having your photograph taken with them.
