Phuket

Of course, Phuket is renowned for its stunning beaches, and with over 30, there's plenty of choice. From, peaceful, palm-fringed bays in the north to more lively beaches offering a wide variety of water sports, in the South.

One of the best ways to take in the stunning scenery and beautiful beaches and islands that are dotted around the fringes of Phuket is on a boat tour, from Khao Phing Kan (the James Bond Island) and UNESCO World Heritage site to the sea gypsy village of Koh Panyee Island, a stunning, self-reliant floating village with its own school, hospital and temple. The village was created by three enterprising Indonesian fishermen, some 200 years ago.

But Phuket is more than stunning beaches. Visit Tai Hua Museum in the Old Town, where the exhibits tell the fascinating story of Phuket’s traditions and links with China. The museum itself previously functioned as a Chinese language school. Linger for a while in one of the most beautiful streets in the world, the Soi Romanee. Browse through its souvenir shops, and admire the buildings while sipping a coffee in one of its many cafes.

Travel South to the rustic village of Rawai, a diverse collection of home studios, built by the artists themselves. Meander through their galleries, where you can discover some bold and contemporary original artwork.

Sip a refreshing Mojito in the stunning grounds of Phuket’s Chalong Bay Rum Distillery. Take a short tour of the distillery and learn how this sweet spirit is made. For two days during the week, the distillery also hosts cocktail workshops. You know you want to...

Finally, before leaving Phuket, you should visit the Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre. Although a tiny sanctuary, the work done here is outstanding, as they adopt Gibbons that have been previously kept in captivity and used for tourist attractions. No need for concern. Because of what the Gibbons have gone through they need to be caged. If they were simply set free they would be very vulnerable, so the centre teaches them Gibbon behaviour. They also match a male and female together before releasing them back into the wild. Arrive early and you’ll hear their morning song. On a small note, please remember while travelling through Thailand and its islands, you can help the Gibbons that you may see in bars or on beaches by not having your photograph taken with them.
