Captivating Colombo
Explore Columbo, with its heady mixture of colonial and impressive new architectures, temples that happily mingle with markets and very modern shopping malls or museums proudly displaying over 2000 fascinating years of Sri Lankan history.
As you leave your vehicle, your ears are filled with the sound of cars, three-wheelers, scooters, horns and happy-faced Sri Lankans chatting to one another. In a city with so much hustle and bustle, they still find time to simply stop and chat.
It's time to visit Columbo’s National Museum where you can learn about Sri Lanka’s ancient rituals and beliefs, embodied in beautiful statues, ceramics, textiles, and masks.
With your mind full of Sri Lanka’s history, take a walk round the sensational public park next to the National Museum. Viharamahadevi Park is the oldest and largest park in Colombo. Cool off in the fountains, or just sit for a while in the shade of a tree, calmly contemplating your day.
Where Temples and shops nestle together.
Once you have rested, it's time to visit the Gangaramaya Temple. Stroll respectfully across the boardwalk, passing over an exquisite lake and, as you enter, take a moment to take in the incense and feel its bewitching spirituality. Explore a little further to be inspired by impressive statues and a mesmerising collection of Buddhist artefacts and artwork, then quietly observe monks going about their daily practise and leave your own offering of Lotus flowers at the base of the Bodhi tree.
Time now for a little more history. Visit Sri Lanka’s Independence square, an archaeological marvel constructed with national history and culture in mind, it was built to commemorate the islands most significant moment when it became independent on the 4th of February 1948. Study the pillars and their pictures, you won't find two alike.
Now, back to modern day living and maybe incorporate a little retail therapy? Jostle with locals in the markets, strike up a conversation with a stall seller while finding a bargain, or visit one of several ultra-modern shopping malls, such as Galle Face Mall and its six storeys of shopping to be had.
Sri Lanka embraces you into its capital city.
