The Culture Triangle’s reputation stems from three ancient island capital cities: in the north, Anuradhapura; a little to the east lies Polonnaruwa, and in the southwest, Kandy. All are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Or stroll around the not so forgotten majestic palaces at Polonnaruwa, while imagining its times of glory and terror. Find peace with the Buddhas (no less than 157 statues), in the caves at Dambulla. For a truly modern and moving experience, hop on a hot air balloon at dawn and see where it leads you, marvelling at the emerging scenery from on high and celebrate with something bubbly at the end.

Dare to step between the feet of the mighty lion at Sigiriya, climb the steps to the top and (if you’re still able) wander around the ruins of the palace fortress, stand still for a moment and drink in the outstanding views below, before the long descent back to the tranquil gardens below.

Mingle with monks at the raucous temple of the sacred tooth in Kandy. You may even have the privilege to witness the magnificent 'Esala Perahera’ festival that takes place in July/August.

Slowly scale the heights of Ritigala forest monastery, an ancient Buddhist retreat, now a strict nature reserve, helping to make this place feel restful, calm and soothing, a place where your imagination will bring history alive.
