Serenity in Bentota
By the time we reached Bentota, we practically had the beach to ourselves. The sound of the waves was our constant companion, and the soft sand beneath our feet felt like a reward after a long day of exploring.

A Private Beach and Thunderstorm Outside Galle
On a separate trip, we stayed just outside Galle, at a hotel with its own private beach. It was blissfully quiet until the skies opened in a spectacular thunderstorm, turning the ocean into a stage for nature’s dramatic performance. Watching lightning dance over the waves while we sipped something warm is a memory I’ll never forget. On leaving that hotel to travel to our next spot, we passed the iconic stilted fishermen, a scene so striking it almost looks like a postcard.

Trincomalee: One Night of Wild Beauty
We also spent one night in Trincomalee, on the east coast, at the start of the rainy season. Normally calm waters were rougher than usual, giving the beach a wild, dramatic beauty. Being right there by the ocean, listening to waves crash against the shore and feeling the salty breeze, made that brief stay utterly unforgettable. On many Trincomalee beaches, cows sometimes wander along the sand, adding a uniquely Sri Lankan touch — though we didn’t see any ourselves as the weather was too rough.

Beaches for Every Kind of Visitor
Over the years, we’ve discovered that Sri Lanka’s beaches offer something for every kind of visitor. There’s Unawatuna Beach, with its calm waters and excellent snorkelling, and a lively mix of restaurants that make it perfect for families. For a more energetic vibe, Hikkaduwa Beach promises coral reef adventures, surfing, and even the occasional beach party if you fancy one. On the east coast, Nilaveli Beach boasts pristine sands and easy access to Pigeon Island, a diver’s paradise, while Pasikudah Beach is a dream for anyone wanting shallow, calm waters ideal for a gentle swim. Mirissa is another must-visit destination, famous for its whale watching and laid-back vibe. Just nearby is Secret Beach, not so secret anymore, but still a peaceful escape from the crowds. And for those seeking a hidden gem, Hiriketiya Bay offers a quiet, relaxing escape with gentle waves perfect for catching the sunset or simply letting your thoughts drift.

Surfer’s Paradise: Arugam Bay
For surfers, Arugam Bay on the southeast coast is legendary, with laid-back cafés, rolling waves, and a community that’s as vibrant as the ocean.
Stories in the Waves
Sri Lanka’s coastlines are steeped in stories, from sea gods guarding fishermen to tales of shipwrecks along the southern shores. Every wave feels like it carries a fragment of history, a whisper from the past, connecting you to something timeless.
Travel Tips for the Perfect Beach Day
- Join a local beach clean-up if you can, or at least take a few pieces of rubbish with you when you leave.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen; the sun is strong even when the sky is grey.
- Swimwear is for the sand only; always cover up when leaving the beach.
Falling in Love with Sri Lanka’s Beaches
Truthfully, we never considered ourselves beach people. But Sri Lanka’s beaches? They’ve changed our minds completely. Every visit offered something new, a private moment of peace, a thunderstorm to remember, turtles gliding by, whales breaching, and I can’t wait to return. And I know there are so many more beaches, like Mirissa, Secret Beach, Hiriketiya, Pasikudah, Unawatuna, Nilaveli, and Hikkaduwa, waiting to create their own unforgettable memories.
